The console rivalry between Sega and Nintendo is not only the subject of the forthcoming book by Blake Harris ‘CONSOLE WARS: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation‘, but it’s also being developed as a feature film to be written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
The film is being developed by Sony Pictures and Scott Rudin (Moneyball, The Social Network), and in addition, Harris, is co-directing a documentary about the era as well.
So this could be interesting – the book will be published in August 2014, and we’ll have to see what happens with the movie. It’s slightly odd timing considering the most recent console war has been between Microsoft and Sony, with Nintendo’s Wii U fading into the side somewhat, and Sega now a software publisher following the Saturn and Dreamcast.
Expect things to focus on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) battle for American consumers. The Sonic vs Mario war ended by 2001 when the production of the Sega Dreamcast finished, but there are plenty of interesting tales from inside both camps during the 1990s.
